Howe Elementary Community Project

We decided to do our project about recycling here at Howe! We decided to pick something that is easy enough for people to do but can also make a big impact on stopping pollution. We made a trash mural to represent how trash can be turned into treasure! We also each wrote down how important recycling is for us. By picking up trash around the school and our neighborhood, we were able to improve the earth and make something beautiful to look at!!

Bregy Elementary Community Project

At Bregy we did our projects on hydropower. First we learned about what hydropower is and how water can be used as energy. Then we came up with a chant.  "Falling water, falling water! Swoosh, swoosh! Hydropower, hydropower!" Falling water is when the water falls from the sky, swoosh is the way the water moves after raining, and the hydropower part talks about a thing called a turbine that spins around when the water is passing. All this creates the renewable energy called HYDROPOWER!!

Potter Thomas Elementary Community Project

At Potter Thomas we learned about different types of energy like thermal, radiant, renewable, and nonrenewable. We got to act like scientists and test our experiments. We did an experiment about thermal energy where we looked at the how hot and cold effected glow sticks. When we put it in hot water the sticks got brighter and when we put it in cold water they got really dim. It was so cool!

For our final project we taught people about hydropower by hanging posters around the school!

We learned alot and had alot of fun! We love Girls Inc. and we love science!!

Girls Inc. Operation SMART

Girls Inc. inspires all girls to be Strong, Smart, and Bold. We achieve this through programming that is facilitated in schools and other various settings. One of these programs is Operation SMART (Science, Math, and Relative Technology). Sponsored by PECO and Comcast, this program teaches girls about science, math, and technology, and encourages them to explore careers in these fields. As the young girls of today and the future women leaders of tomorrow, it is important that our girls understand that there are no limits to what they can achieve. Whether they aspire to be an astronaut, engineer, or CEO of their own companies, our girls know that being a woman in those careers means that they will be that much stronger, and never allow anyone to hinder them.

Operation SMART is being facilitated at three schools: Bregy, Howe, and Fulton elementary schools, and a Saturday program held at Widener Library. Each school has been learning about energy sources and creating projects to reflect what they've learned. In the upcoming posts, each school will blog and post picutres about their amazing projects. Stay tuned...
